Equities provide an excellent investment opportunity for investors wishing to diversify in order to reduce overall portfolio risk as well as raise the overall return from the portfolio. This ability to raise returns is particularly important today in light of the massive reductions seen in the return on risk-free instruments issued by the government of Pakistan. A well-constructed equity portfolio, while having short-term price risk, will in most cases deliver superior returns to almost all other financial instruments over a reasonable time-frame, and is probably the only instrument available in Pakistan today that protects an investor from inflation. Furthermore, equity investments have preferential tax treatment, which is no longer available in other instruments. These advantages include zero taxes on capital gains, and 10% tax on dividend income.
